I’m a regular freelance filmmaker for BBC1 The One Show shooting and edit producing five minute VT inserts for the programme. I was searching for a treatment for an item about the dangers of diet pills and thought a studio location would work well. I wanted to give the whole film a photo shoot feel as this was in keeping with the body image theme, it also meant we could get almost all of the case studies in one location! We opted for Studio Manchester which has a great studio/loft feel.
I like to try out new kit, you’ll notice this film has a lot of steadicam-like tracking shots. These were done with a GoPro Hero4 on a 3 axis gimbal. For the DSLR full frame studio photography feel we shot the opening sequence on a Canon C300 with an LED hoop light.
For the interview sequences an additional two Canon XF305’s were used. With great light I think the 305 cuts well with the C300. The trick is not to go crazy with the C300’s amazing ability to provide a shallow depth of field. The pill close ups were done on a Canon 5D Mark II with a 50mm Macro lens.
I lit the studio with five large LED panel lights, they’re great for filming as you can control the colour balance. Even the non adjustable ones fire out 56k daylight. They’re also don’t get too hot to touch.
